Since its beginnings in the early 1970’s, the Kohler Stables breeding operation has made great advances and grown in equal proportion. Initially, it began as a personal venture for, Herbert V. Kohler Jr. When Herb first stood Vigilmarch at stud, he handled all the breedings himself – during his lunch hour.

In 1975, current farm manager and head trainer, Tom Caisse arrived on the scene, and the Kohler/Caisse team began to pursue the goal of producing a superior Morgan Show Horse. Throughout the ensuing years they have refined their methods and strategies and have produced countless numbers of World and National Champions.

During any given year, each of the 12 breeding stallions (Morgans, Saddlebreds and Hackney Ponies) that Kohler stands produces quite an array of foals either owned by Kohler Stables or for outside mares. Careful records are kept of all the stallions and their semen is evaluated each and every time it is collected. Armed with this information, adjustments are continually being made in the care and medications of each stallion and/or the method in which the semen is extended and shipped.

Because they stand such a large number of stallions and maintain an even larger band of broodmares, the breeding lab and mare barns are understandably a hive of activity during the breeding season. “Watching the monitors” becomes a way of life for the staff during the months of January through June. Each mare receives the best care possible. They are grain-fed and receive vitamin supplements on a daily basis. Each is assisted during the birthing process and the foals are given round-the-clock attention during their first 24-48 hours of life.
